What is AO+ Mist?
It’s a patented, first-of-its-kind product that uses truly live and active probiotics for radiant, healthier-looking skin. Our ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) topical spray is a skin mist to use after bathing, before bedtime, and whenever you find convenient. The spray consists of a strain of safe live-cultured AOB. It is a “good bacteria” found in nature that lives off the ammonia you produce through sweat on your skin, working to naturally balance your skin microbiome.
Is this the same product as Mother Dirt's AO+ Restorative Mist?
Yes, this is the exact same formula and packaging as the products previously sold as Mother Dirt and AO+ Restorative Mist. AOBiome Therapeutics is our parent company and is the same company behind all previous versions of the Mist from Mother Dirt.
How does "good bacteria" work?
The patented live probiotic in our Mist, ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), also known as “Nitrifying Bacteria,” are microorganisms that consume ammonia for energy and are present wherever a nitrogen cycle is taking place. The specific AOB used in our Mist is Nitrosomonas eutropha. Nitrosomonas work by consuming the irritating compounds produced by your skin, such as ammonia and urea in sweat, and creating beneficial byproducts, Nitrite and Nitric Oxide. Nitrite tames the "bad bacteria" and promotes the "good bacteria" on the skin. Nitric Oxide is a key antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Together, these two byproducts do a great deal to promote healthy skin overall.
What ingredients are in the Mist?
The Mist is made up of simple, all-natural ingredients: water, nitrosomonas eutropha (our patented live AOB culture), disodium phosphate and magnesium chloride (natural salts to stabilize the AOBs).
Is AO+ Mist safe for sensitive skin?
Yes, AO+ Mist is good for all skin types! The ammonia-oxidizing bacteria in our Mist are naturally occurring, and no synthetic ingredients are used. The Mist is certified vegan, preservative-free, and fragrance-free.
Is the Mist vegan and cruelty-free?
Yes! AOBiome Cosmetic products are never tested on animals. The Mist's only ingredients are water, Nitrosomonas eutropha (ammonia-oxidizing bacteria), Disodium phosphate, and Magnesium chloride (natural salts). No synthetic or animal-based ingredients are used.
Because we believe in being fully honest and transparent, we want to make you aware that D23 Ammonia Oxidizing Bacteria Topical Spray is produced by AOBiome Therapeutics, Inc, a biopharmaceutical company engaged in high-level bio-therapeutic research and testing. The FDA requires animal testing as part of their process to ensure that pharmaceuticals are both safe and effective and there is no way around this process. AOBiome is committed to work with the FDA to find alternatives to animal testing whenever possible and to minimize animal testing when no alternative is available.
How to Use & Store
How do I use the Mist?
Good question! We're so glad you asked. First, shake the bottle, then spray the areas of concern on your skin 2-3 times before other products. We recommend repeating this process twice a day, in the morning and evening. The Mist is safe to use anywhere on your skin: face, scalp, underarms, groin, hands, feet, etc. The AOBs in the Mist are especially effective in areas you sweat.
We recommend using it as the first step in your routine, after cleansing your skin (optional) and before other topical products like lotions, serums, makeup, and SPF. Spritz throughout the day, after a shower, post-workout, before bed, or whenever you need a refresh. Most importantly - experiment! See what works best for you in terms of routine, frequency, and quantity. Happy misting!
How do I store my Mist?
We recommend keeping your Mist refrigerated for best results. For maximum benefit from the live probiotic mist, use it within 6 months from purchase date if kept refrigerated or within 4 weeks if stored at room temperature (68℉-86℉).
What products can I use with the Mist?
You do not need to change your current health and beauty products to use the Mist. However, some of those products may not support your overall skin microbiome. We recommend natural, simple products like cleansers without sulfates or preservatives and squalane-based moisturizers or a similar non-comedogenic moisturizing agent that works with your natural oils and doesn't clog pores.
How long until I start seeing results?
Some customers see results almost immediately, depending on their skin concern. Most customers see results within 2 to 4 weeks.
How long will a bottle of Mist last for me?
A bottle lasts most customers for 1-3 months, depending on their daily usage and time of year. If a bottle lasts you more than a month, make sure to store your Mist in the fridge to maintain maximum benefits.
Do I need to keep using the Mist to maintain all its benefits?
This all depends on your personal habits - not just the showering and the products you use, but also the amount you sweat. Having a healthy biome is an ongoing process, not simply a destination. We view a “biome-friendly” routine as a two-part process. First is replenishing the beneficial bacteria we naturally lose on a regular basis, which is what our D23 Ammonia Oxidizing Bacteria Topical Spray does. Second is making sure that the products we use don’t harm the skin's beneficial bacteria. The good bacteria on our skin are constantly in flux, depending on our environment, what we expose them to, and their life cycle. It's a natural part of the process. For this reason, it's important to replenish the "good bacteria" your skin craves. Does this mean you'll always have to use the same amount of D23 Ammonia Oxidizing Bacteria Topical Spray? Not necessarily. It depends on your personal habits, environment, and routine. We encourage you to experiment and find what works best for you over time.

Important Update About Shipping Temperatures:
We ship AOB products in insulated envelopes with cold packs to mitigate temperature extremes, both hot and cold. Our AOBs are living organisms and therefore sensitive to their environment. As soil-based bacteria, they are able to survive in much the same temperatures as humans - freezing will kill them, as will long exposure to extremely high temperatures. They can handle short-term exposure to higher temperatures up to 95°F for several days.
Your package arriving warm is okay with the ice packs melted and has no impact on the product's life or potency. If your package arrives either hot or frozen solid, please contact us at shop@aobiome.com

My Mist arrived warm, and the ice pack had melted. Should I be concerned?
We ship our Mist bottles in insulated envelopes with ice packs, but we don't expect them to always arrive cold, especially in the summer months. The AOBs in our Mist can handle short-term exposure to higher temperatures up to 95°F for several days. Your package arriving warm with the ice packs melted is okay and has no impact on the product's life or potency. If your package arrives hot, please contact us at shop@aobiome.com for a replacement.
My order arrived damaged, what do I do?
Please inspect your order upon receipt and contact us immediately at shop@aobiome.com if the item is defective, damaged, or incorrect, so we can evaluate the issue and make it right.
Returns & Refunds
Return policy
We have a 30-day return policy, which means you have 30 days from the date you receive your item to request a return. We understand that our AO+ Mist's results may vary from person to person, so if you've used our product and decide it is not for you, we will give you a full refund of the purchase price.

Submitting an Order Withdrawal
Per the European Union 14-day cooling-off period: If your order is being shipped into the European Union, you have the right to cancel or return your order within 14 days, for any reason and without a justification. As above, your item must be in the same condition that you received it, unworn or unused, with tags, and in its original packaging. You’ll also need the receipt or proof of purchase.
